Seven webmaster social bookmarking tips

Filed under: Webmasters — edvertising @ 10:34 pm

In a previous article, I itemized the five ways (perhaps there are more?) that webmasters can benefit from the social bookmarking craze. I explained exactly how their websites can benefit from:

- Repeat visitors – Viral social bookmarking – Viral linking – SEO-friendly links (from social bookmarking sites) – SEO-friendly links elsewhere (as a result of links on social bookmarking sites)

Now let’s look at what steps you, as a webmaster, can take to increase your website’s benefits from social bookmarking.

MAKE IT EASY for your visitors to social bookmark your website.

This means offering them as many options as possible. You might want to use a multi-bookmarking service, such as the free script that I developed called TheBookmarketer social bookmarking tool.

It also means making the bookmarking links easy to find, usually at the top of the page or at the base of an article. You can see this in action at the top of http://www.thehappyguy.com/olympic-medal.html or at the bottom of http://www.wv-travel-directory.com/directory/0-world/38-travel-journals/view.html.

BOOKMARK YOUR PAGES yourself. Yes, this means signing up for accounts at several bookmarking services. Choose as many or as few as you wish, but remember that when it comes to marketing your website, the more venues the better.

Do I have to remind you to call your mother? This would be an excellent time…”Hi mom, How are you doing? Yes, I know it’s been a while…by the way, do you Digg?” Don’t be shy; ask family and friends to social bookmark your pages, too.

SWAP BOOKMARKS with others who also want their pages bookmarked. For instance, if you search Google for “Grab The Bookmarketer For Your Site”, you will find other websites that are actively courting social bookmarks. All you have to do is offer to bookmark some of their pages if they bookmark some of yours. It’s a lot like a link exchange, except that it plays out on other websites. Now some social bookmarkers look askance at such joint ventures, and some even think that webmasters should not be promoting their websites at all.

PARTICIPATE in the social bookmarking site. There are some services that don’t feature much participation; others are very participatory. Where you have the option, develop a large friend’s list, so that you can easily share bookmarks. Bookmark, tag or comment on others’ bookmarks. Being a good citizen gibes a person credibility in the community…even the online community.

BOOKMARK OTHER PAGES that already link to your website. Don’t just bookmark your own pages; bookmark those that link to yours. Choose especially pages that are relevant, that do not compete directly with yours and that list very few of your competitors. Let’s face it, if traffic to all those pages goes up, so does traffic to your website. And if link value goes up to all those pages, so does link-value to your website.

IF YOU HAVE A LIST, ask them to bookmark any new page on your website that you want to generate traffic to. And speaking of new pages…

HAVE OUTSTANDING CONTENT. If your content doesn’t stand out, the best you can do is your own contrived bookmarking. Sure, that can help, but it’s nothing compared to the power of thousands of people bookmarking your web pages because they think it’s just awesome!

All the social bookmarking and SEO tactics you employ can massively help to market your website, but without great content your chances of success are pretty slim. Put up the content, make it easy for people to social bookmark your website, bookmark some of your own pages and encourage anybody you know to do likewise.

Starting An Online Internet Business – 7 Tips To Make It Easier

Filed under: Newsletters — edvertising @ 10:33 pm

For several years I did research online to find the real internet “gurus” to learn how to start an online business. After finding all the scams, my head began to hurt. Luckily, I did not fall for any of them. Finally, I stumbled across some legitimate resources and the pain subsided. The information I found lead to more information which lead to even more information. Obviously, my head began to hurt again. I was suffering from information overload! Everything that I saw I had to learn about. The problem was, I was trying to learn too many things at once.

There are many ways to earn money online. Among the most popular are online stores, affiliate marketing, internet auctions and selling information products or e-books. I have subscribed to newsletters, read e-books and even listened to tele-seminars to learn about all of these and more. In the process of learning, guess what happened? I was reading about the success of others and becoming very frustrated with my lack of success. I have learned some lessons along the way. Here are some tips, I hope you will find helpful:

1. Learn one thing at a time! Interested in selling products on an online auction? Learn about that first! If you do not know where to start, go to the auction website. There are tutorials that are broken down into simple steps to help you. They want you to be successful. After all, if you make money, they make money!

2. Find something that interests you and sell it. It’s not a good idea to try and make money doing something that you hate. You won’t be successful. If you are not a fan of movies, selling dvds is probably not a good idea.

3. Start a business that you can afford. Is money tight? There are ways to start a business with very little money. Later you will be able to invest more. Need $50 for an e-book you have been dying to buy? I used to give up things that I didn’t need like the impulse items at the store checkout line to save money to buy resources. Read about the resources before you buy them. Look up the titles on the search engines and get some feedback. Also, a money-back guarantee is a huge plus! You cannot afford to waste money on information that is not helpful. Never ask someone for your money back for information that you have found to be well worth it. They may be a great contact or resource to help you make more money later! Besides, do unto others!

4. Set realistic goals that are well defined. Keep it simple, especially if you are just starting out. For example, you could set a goal of seven days to sign up for an account on an online auction site and find three things in your own home to sell just to learn how the process works. For a long time, I had so many broad, complicated goals that I could not reach them. I may as well have had no goals at all.

5. Have a positive mindset! If you think you are going to fail, most likely you will. Avoid listening to others who tell you that you can’t do it. Talk with others about your business who are positive. Believe me, it really helps! One day I made the statement to a co-worker that I was going to make a living online one day. She told me that she knew I would too because I wanted it so much. Her reassurance helped to motivate me even more. A positive attitude can be very contagious!

6. It is not easy! If you are looking to get rich quick, good luck! You will read about people who have made a lot of money quickly online, but not without effort. Yes, there are some who, if they went bankrupt today, could be fairly wealthy soon. However, most of these people are experienced online entrepreneurs. What I have found is that if you enjoy what you are doing, it will become easier.

7. Take action! One of the biggest mistakes that I made was doing so much research, that is all I was doing. The funny thing is, most of the information I read told me to take action but I didn’t listen. I had a million reasons why I couldn’t just go ahead and start making money online. I didn’t know enough yet or I had not saved enough money. I learned the most by actually doing what I had only been dreaming about before.

By following these tips, I know you will find success online even if you just want to earn some extra money. If you make some mistakes, and you probably will, learn from them and use it as a tool to become more successful.

Wealth Building Using Astrology – Working With Personal Affinities

Filed under: Metaphysical — edvertising @ 10:30 pm

Like attracts like. This rule of physics is as real in a metaphysical universe as it is in a physical one.

Everything works by affinities. Whether it is in a smaller cell between individuals or even in a larger society with a collective cluster of communities, everything works through contracted affinities. That which binds two partners is always some portion of common affinities that operate mutually at a deeper level. And when that affinity wears off, by karmic time, all chemistry that appeared tightly bonded, subsequently phases off, things break down, and each will return to different but unique paths again.

For this reason, no matter how intelligent and acute one’s business acumen, that knowledge and skill does not work across the board proficiently. It is more than just a matter of data, trends and charts. This Rule of Affinities is the missing link in all business studies. This missing link takes the serious entrepreneur beyond typical qualifications and competencies. In the ‘astrological index’ of a Corporate Astrology, this Measure of Affinities is a major component.

One of the first things a good astrological analyst would want to do is to determine the path of wealth for the subject. This, from the outset, is a major piece of work to be studied even before the astrological analysis begins. Absolute questions that beg for relative answers will send the astrologer round the horoscope endlessly. So here are some daringly worldly answers that astrology can provide without distorting our perspective on wealth as it is largely accepted.

First, to consider the subject’s style of ‘occupation’. Will he find greater gratification as a 9 to 5 worker? As a trader? A dealer? A broker? A management executive behind a desk, a field executive basking under the sun? A power networker? A product-based person? A service-oriented person? A people interactor? A lab reclusive? A document engineer? A power tool handler? A negotiator? Etc. Even though many jobs require a mix of these, but a good synthesis of these different astrological competencies will reveal his ‘path’ for better performance. If he is on the right track, the quality of his performance will be not be a major issue. Corrections are more easily addressed. A simple look at the house containing his occupational ‘vision’ (normally but not always the 10th house) and then setting that against the house showing his ‘entrepreneurial sense’ (typically the 5th house) will reveal an aggregate weight for his path of lesser resistance.

Typically, if a person’s horoscope promises stronger ’service’ factors, then no matter his love for business, no matter his opportunities, things will not appear easily for his ‘business development’. It will eventually end up with him still acting as an executive, probably a more empowered executive, still under some ‘rule’ imposed upon him, depriving him of the full privileges of total ownership, even if he is the owner. On the other hand, if the entrepreneurial factor is dominant in a personal horoscope, it is just a matter of time before he leaves his 9 to 5 routine; whether he has inviting opportunities or not.

Alternatively, just as in major cycles there are minor cycles, likewise in bigger encompassing affinities, there are smaller affinities within. Just to cite a recent case, when I predicted that the husband will involve himself in creative work, even though I saw his equal affinity as a machine-related worker, I told him that he would be some kind of engineer but dealing with ‘design’ work, and that he would be better off working in an organization not his own for now. The wife beside him then responded excitedly saying that she had some good business opportunities for him, that he doesn’t seem to take it seriously and is complacent about starting his own consultancy to take on that huge project. He admits that he is a mechanical engineer and that he particularly enjoys designing tools and machines with the engineering design software that he has become adept at and currently recognized as a leading authority in his work, and prefers to stay on doing that work rather than take on the ‘burden’ of being a businessman on his own.

Generally, the affinity that binds the successful businessman to his ‘destined’ success is as follows:

- his affinity with a certain skill that he will develop more easily to – mature into placing him at a place and time for the next higher stage of development – that will in turn, affiliate him to a certain group of people or company – and make him work ‘through’ a specific kind or type of product or industry that will appear to be so ‘natural’ for him to succeed with or build on even further into greater wealth or fame

To determine one’s affinities is the first thing to do even before asking ‘when’ one will make one’s millions. There’s a lot of work to be done, but it’s worth every minute with your serious astrologer.

Web Hosting Tips

Filed under: Javascript — edvertising @ 10:26 pm

In order to become successful online you really need your own website, but how do you choose which hosting plan is right for you? There are many factors that you need to be aware of before you decide which company you want to use.

Firstly, you may want to use a free hosting service for your first website but there are some major disadvantages such as disk space and data transfer restrictions, banner or pop up adverts which you have no control over, and a lack of personal support if you require any help.

With website hosting accounts now available for as little as $5 per month for 5 gigabytes disk space and 2550 gigabytes data transfer there really is no need to use a free service anymore.

Here are some of the factors you need to consider before choosing a professional website host like NxtDomains.com Hosting :

Web hosting Tip 1. The amount of disk space you require. If you plan on creating a large website with hundreds or thousands of content pages and various scripts you will need a hosting plan that offers unlimited disk space so that you never have to worry about how large your websites gets. Some hosting plans offer a set amount of disk space with no ability to upgrade to get more so if you reach the limit you will need to find a new host and transfer your entire website which can be very stressful and time consuming.

Web Hosting tip 2. The amount of data transfer you require. If you plan on sending a large amount of visitors to your website every month you will need a hosting plan that offers a large amount of data transfer (also known as bandwidth) so that you never have to worry about how much traffic you send to your website. If you reach the limit of your allocated monthly data transfer your website will become unavailable for the rest of the month which can result in a massive loss of profits.

Web hosting tip 3. The number of domain names you require. If you plan on creating many different websites you will need a hosting plan that offers the ability to host multiple separate domains on one account so that you don’t have to create a new account for each domain name.

Web hosting tip 4. Support for the latest versions of PHP, Perl, JavaScript, and CGI. This is essential if you intend to install various scripts on your website such as blogs, forums, article directories, etc…

Web Hosting tip 5. Access to MySQL, SSL, and shopping cart. If you plan on using scripts on your website you will need to be able to create MySQL databases and if you want to collect credit card information you will need SSL for encrypted security.

Web Hosting tip 6. Support for both DreamWeaver and FrontPage. Whether you use DreamWeaver or FrontPage you will need a hosting plan that offers compatibility with both in case you decide to switch and use one over the other.

Web hosting tip 7. Personalized email accounts. Its important to be able to create personalized email addresses for your domain name including mail forwarding addresses, catch all addresses, auto responder addresses, and the ability to retrieve mail with your email software.

Web hosting tip 8. Shared or dedicated server. The problem with a shared server (also known as a virtual server) is that only a small amount of disk space and data transfer is available and that many other websites will be hosted on the same server which can reduce the loading speed and availability of your website. Its far better and safer to use a dedicated server because your website will be the only one using it and you will have far more disk space and data transfer.

Web hosting tip 9. Windows or Linux server. In the past there where some major differences between Windows and Linux based servers but recent improvements have meant that these differences have now diminished to the point where you can make your choice of hosting company based on the features they offer rather than the operating system.

Web hosting tip 10. Live support. This is one of the most important factors when choosing a website host because if you ever have any problems you need to be able to instantly communicate with a professional to solve the issue. It can be very frustrating if you have to wait a few days for your help desk ticket to be answered.

This is a brief overview of what you should look out for before you decide to purchase a hosting plan. Its a good idea to plan for the long term and buy as much disk space and data transfer as you can afford to ensure that you don’t run into any problems in the future.

Sign up for the most cheap web hosting plan with 5 GB sapce, 250 GB bandwidth, and support to Frontpage, DreamWeaver, CGI, Perl, PHP5, with 24×7 online free support by phone, email and online talk only for $4.99/month at NxtDomains.com hosting – now hosting 46000 web sites.

Take Control of Your Home Environment

Filed under: Home Accessories — edvertising @ 10:22 pm

People with allergies face the possibility of having a reaction almost everywhere they go. Though we cannot control the environments of other people’s homes, businesses or other public areas, we can make a difference in our own homes. Here are some tips for reducing allergens in your home.

In the Bedroom It is particularly important to clear the sleeping environment of allergens because symptoms tend to worsen at night and may cause an asthmatic to wake up with an asthma attack. * Clean the room of any visible mold. Get behind dressers and furniture, in closets and in corners, where mold may lurk. * Remove anything that may contain material you have not been cleared from by your doctor. Sensitivity testing will reveal which materials you are allergic to. Once you know what to look for find items containing or made up of those materials and remove them from your room (polyester, acrylic, nylon, wool, etc.). * Keep pets out of the bedroom. You may not be allergic to the pets themselves, but all kinds of allergens get trapped in their fur – from dust to other irritants – which are rubbed off on blankets, clothing, carpet, and so on. * Do some spring cleaning. Clean out your closets and dressers and 1) Get rid of anything you haven’t worn in a year; and 2) Wash everything else in an allergen-free detergent – or one that you know does not irritate your skin. This includes sheets and blankets that you know are not made of or contain materials you are allergic to. Clothes should be rinsed twice to thoroughly eliminate any detergent residues.

BioSET practitioners clear patients for common allergens in the bedroom air. First, the person is asked to leave an open jar of water in their bedroom for 24 hours. Then they are cleared for whatever substances are suspended in the water. This technique clears for various gases that may be given off in the bedroom by furniture, fabrics, carpets, and other items that might be difficult to identify individually. The person is also tested and cleared for sensitivities to materials commonly used in bedding, including wool, acrylic, nylon, polyester, and cotton.

Use the process of elimination to identify irritants in your bedroom. Do you have any plants, potpourri, dried flowers or other accessories that could be causing your allergies? Remove the items from your bedroom one at a time for at least three days. If your symptoms subside while that particular item is out of the room; keep it out.

One of the most common allergens that trigger asthmatics is dust mites. It is important to get rid of accumulations of dust. These next few tips are specific to the bedroom, but should be applied throughout the house.

* There should be smooth, uncluttered surfaces in the bedroom, with few small objects like books, knick- knacks, CDs, tapes, or stuffed animals that attract dust (and dust mites). * Bedrooms should not be used as libraries or studies. Dust loves books. * Bedding should be washed weekly in hot water–135 degrees Fahrenheit–to kill dust mites. Cool water just gives them a bath. * Pillows can be encased in non-allergic and non-permeable dust-proof covers, if the person sleeping on them is not sensitive to the material. Otherwise, the cover will do more harm than good. * Avoid feather comforters and pillows, and remove carpeting if possible. * Carpeting is a major hiding place for dust mites. * Avoid wall pennants, macramé hangings, and other dust catchers. * Stuffed toys should be machine washable. * Keep all clothing in a closet with the door closed. * When vacuuming or dusting, be sure to use a dust face mask.

In the Kitchen * Mold grows in refrigerators, particularly around door gaskets, in water pans below self-defrosting refrigerators, and on spoiled foods. * Mold can also grow on garbage, so containers should be emptied and cleaned frequently.

In the Bathroom * Remove excess water from shower doors, tiles, and tubs with a squeegee. * Shower curtains, bath tile, shower stalls, tubs, and toilet tanks should all be washed with mold-preventive solutions. * Do not carpet the bathroom. * Bath sponges and other so-called “spa” items are breeding grounds for mold and bacteria. Use a wash cloth instead and wash it frequently with the laundry.

Chlorine is a common sensitivity for asthmatics, and when present in tap water, the effects are particularly noticeable after a shower. There may be difficulty breathing and a feeling of running out of oxygen. Some asthmatics have found that a chlorine-removing filter on the showerhead helps to prevent this reaction.

Chemicals used in toiletries, from cosmetics to perfume and lotions, are common allergens and irritants for asthma-sufferers. Learning about and using natural soaps and skin care products–as well as natural house-cleaning products–can make a huge and immediate difference in respiratory health and allergy symptoms.

In the Laundry Room and Basement * In the laundry room, vent the dryer outside and dry clothing immediately after washing. * In a basement, do not lay carpet and pads on a concrete floor. Use vinyl flooring instead. * Dirt floors should be covered with a vapor barrier. * Keep the basement free of dust, and remove stored items that are likely to harbor mold. * Sensitive individuals should not have their bedroom on a basement level.

These tips may seem extreme, but for those who suffer from allergies and asthma attacks, making their home environment a cleaner place to live is well worth the time.

If you believe you have allergies and aren’t sure what you are allergic to, or if you believe that your asthma is connected to allergies, see a doctor and be tested for sensitivities. Once you know what causes your allergies, you can take steps to remove those irritants from your home. Until then, you acn follow some of these helpful tips.

The USA Tire Industry in the World Market Place

Filed under: Autos — edvertising @ 10:19 pm

Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company is one of the biggest tire producers in the world after Michelin’s acquisition of Royal Goodrich. Goodyear competes in a global tire industry. It aims at keeping its leading position and thus, Goodyear invested more than $1 billion to build automated tire-making facilities, the best in the world. Goodyear expands its tire stores to keep its leadership as the biggest producer-retailer of tires in the USA. Besides, it has invested much money in the investigation and development of tires production. The tires are at the cutting edge of world-class performance and it is a well-known fact. Goodyear maintains its leading position as a high-performance segment of the tire market.

Goodyear is based on the innovative products of high quality and high advertising expenses. It won almost 90 per cent of the market for its high-performance tires for US auto. Besides, it is well-advertised on sporty imports. Owing to its location Goodyear and other USA tire manufacturers has got a great help in the USA market. Though, one should to be critical to point out that tires are far from being cheep to sell them in Europe.

Goodyear has created several barriers to entry in order to compete in the world tire market. Its size gives it a chance to get significant economies of scale, thus, making its costs rather low as compared with the products of its rivals. Production cost cutting is promoted by investment in progressive process of technology. Automated plant equipment also makes it to answer the modern world demands rather quickly to meet present and future market conditions. Goodyear has owned its own shops in order to safe proprietary access to a significant field of distribution. However, Goodyear has made product scale and a high quality model via its deposit in R&D and niche marketing – high-performance tires. New rivals would draw on vital costs to repeat a reputation once again.

Goodyear faces severe competition all the time. For example, last racing season it prevailed in a majority of the competitive series. The continually rising prices and tire rule modifications that do not permit to transfer racing technology to street tires have greatly reduced the return on the deposit in Formula 1 racing.

Diversity is a competitive advantage for global companies, such as Goodyear. It is spreading it all over the company. A varied workforce gives the benefit of well-conducted business in multi-cultural marketplaces all over the world. Goodyear’s strategy has helped it to develop faster than its rivals to found new operations all over the world. Goodyear’s financial power and mobility reached for the last seven years has helped to meet short-term necessities while working for the future success.

Goodyear has decided that it would be more profitable to settle production equipment near the final sale limits as tires are huge and not cheap to ship as compared with their profit limits. This decreases distribution prices and gives important barriers to entry. It also diminishes Goodyear’s foreign exchange risk.

The tire industry is spreading worldwide. Goodyear realizes that one of its major rivals in the future is going to be Bridgestone Tire of Japan. If Goodyear settles its production equipment in Japan this will help Goodyear to cut the prices in critical home market of Bridgestone. This is because of that Bridgestone aims at gaining market share in the USA via aggressive price decreasing. Besides, Japanese car producers will have the opportunity to manufacture two million autos every year in the USA in 1992. If these vehicles will be selling, that will reach car sales by domestic vehicle organizations. Thus, all these processes would cut out the demand for Goodyear tires by Ford, Chrysler and G.M.

In this situation Goodyear most likely replaces some of this lost business with sales to Japanese producers who manufacture in the USA. If Goodyear builds a plant in Japan that will help it to organize a better supplier relationship with Japanese vehicle organizations, and thus, make easier sales to the USA plants. Goodyear is a great company with good positions in the USA and in the whole world. It supplies these Japanese companies since they have modernized their autos and thus, and they have the necessity of high-quality tires, such as of Goodyear.

Bridgestone’s acquisition of Firestone will probably have a negative effect on Goodyear as it is a well-equipped and a well-financed rival who looks for the monopoly rents presently being gained by Goodyear. Nevertheless, having struggled the USA auto producers are presently working with Japanese companies. They may wish to take some of the business they are presently giving to Firestone and redistribute it to Goodyear. Goodyear can make the next step having attacked with cost reductions, product and process modernization, or bonuses. Goodyear directs its cost reduction answer to the Japanese market in order to become more effective and competitive.

As an affiliate marketer your goal is not only to make visitors of your site click the link to the business site; but more importantly, to promote the product so they would buy it. If the customers are not convinced upon going to the business site, then you don’t make money. Make sure the products you are endorsing are worthwhile or in the business context, saleable. Ask yourself: if I were the customer, would I buy it? Would I recommend it to my family or advantageous friend? If you can’t convince yourself or your family and friends to buy it, take a look at your next option.

Another is the affiliate program or the merchandiser’s history. Look into their previous and present sales data, their proven and tested affiliate marketing systems and their partners’ experiences with them. Although, achievement of the program really depends on you, this one is still very urgent. The sales records don’t only show how good the affiliates are, but they speak about the products’ reliability, market availability and the company or the merchandisers’ reputation as well. Moreover, look into and carefully study the company’s compensation plan. Your purpose for joining the program is to earn, so make sure you’ll be paid for all your efforts fairly.

If you do not have much time to promote intensively the affiliate products by creating banners, graphics and articles, settle on affiliate programs that help you create these for your web site. It would be profound if the organization provides training on how to effectively market products online. Remember that affiliate marketing are several partnership, so make sure your partner is able to support you as you help him promote their products and services.

Take down all the positives and negatives of each program you are considering so you can clearly see the difference among your options; then afterwards, compare the advantages of the programs with your own checklist. Spend time to gather all the info you need to select the right program. Remember an informed choice is the best choice.

Safe Surfing – what do you need to know?

Filed under: Advertising — edvertising @ 10:14 pm

Surfing the Internet can be a rewarding and enjoyable experience for everyone in the family but just as you would take steps to protect everyone and everything in your home by making sure you lock the door and by not leaving valuables within easy reach of an opportunist thief, you also need to protect your computer from outside influences otherwise you leave it wide open to attack.

Out there on the information superhighway it is inevitable that at some point you will come across something that could put your computer or your privacy at risk and the frightening thing is, you might not even know about it. However, by being aware and putting a few simple measures in place, you can protect both your computer and your family.

When downloading anything at all from the Internet, which can include things like software, screensavers, music, videos, or when opening files sent to you by email, or even by visiting certain websites, your computer can be exposed to undesirable elements like spyware and adware as well as malicious viruses that can at best seriously impair your internet experience and slow down your connection, and at its worst, can permanently damage your hard drive and your wallet, not to mention your confidence in surfing. So what can you do? First you need to protect your computer and limit the risk.

Protecting your computer

It is essential that you have some good anti-virus software installed on your computer. Viruses are becoming increasingly sophisticated and as new viruses come on the scene, the software has to be updated to make sure you are protected against the latest threats. The good news is that you can update most anti virus software automatically when you are online.

A firewall is excellent as it puts a barrier up between your computer and any opportunist hacker but you must remember that nothing by itself is totally safe, you need several lines of defence, which will make it much more difficult for anything to get in.

Whilst browsing the internet you can inadvertently download Spyware. Spyware does just what it says, it allows others to spy on what you are doing, what sites you visit, how long you are on for and can even record sensitive information like when you type passwords or your credit card information. This obviously invades your privacy and jeopardises the safety of your personal information. Sometimes companies use programmes to gather information on people’s surfing habits so that they can tailor their advertising to match people’s internet use. Although not always malicious, these types of programmes can slow you’re your connection and at the same time plague you with popup after popup and can even take over the way you access the Internet by changing the home page so that each time you open your browser it takes you to where they want you to go. You can prevent this with software that can detect and remove Spyware and Adware from your system.

Another way to protect your computer is to make sure the Internet security settings are set to “high” or “medium”. Sometimes it is necessary to download software so be careful when downloading anything and make sure you read all the supporting literature and privacy statements so that you can decide if their policies are ethical and whether you want to continue.

Children are particularly vulnerable when online as they may not understand the risks involved but as the Internet is now a major part of life in the 21st Century, it is important that they are able to surf without fear and taking the appropriate action can protect them too.

Protecting your family

One major concern these days is that children can be exposed to undesirable content as well as dubious characters that can lurk online in for example, chat rooms and online interactive games. You can protect your children by following a few simple rules:

* Make sure that when your child has access to the Internet there are other people around, so perhaps you could have the computer in a family room

* You could consider software that allows you to monitor your child’s internet use

* Encourage your child to discuss their Internet experience with you and take an active interest in what they are doing online

* You can also make use of filters and settings on your computer to limit what your child is able to do online and to restrict what information they can see and what can be passed on

* Most importantly, you need to educate your child about responsible Internet use, the risks involved and why they should never give out any personal information

A final word…

One thing that software and settings can’t protect you against is you and the choices you make. Complacency about Internet security can be costly and although nothing is 100% safe, because there are those out there who are constantly devising new and more sophisticated techniques to get past the defences, the good news is that by checking the security settings on your computer, keeping your anti virus software up to date, and by staying aware, you can drastically reduce the chance of anyone getting access to your files or invading your privacy and you and your family can carry on surfing with confidence.
